Special Performances

The solo sonata is in 3 movements, composed between 1953 and 1954. The first movement is called “Chaconne;” its Hindemithian theme is developed through continuous variations. The second movement is called Serenade (an interrupted Serenade according to his notebook). Its style is very much like Ligeti’s and Crumb’s solo sonatas, but all 3 sonatas were composed at the same time and doubtfully had any influence on each other. The finale is an energetic Rondo in 7/8.
